LingTube - Showcase Project

LingTube is an AI language learning Chrome extension that adds dual subtitles (bilingual subtitles) to YouTube and Netflix. Instead of translating words like a dictionary, it translates each word and phrase using the subtitle line it appears in and its part of speech, so learners get the meaning used in that sentence. Subtitles are automatically tagged by part of speech, with furigana for Japanese and pinyin for Chinese. Learners can get a grammar breakdown of any sentence, and saved words are tagged with an estimated CEFR level. For YouTube videos without captions, LingTube transcribes the audio with AI and translates it. It also generates video summaries, outlines and mind maps, and answers questions about the video with clickable timestamps. To practice, learners can shadow each subtitle line with waveform comparison, listen to an AI voice-over of the translation, and review saved words and sentences or export them to Anki. LingTube is also social: learners can write timestamped notes and share them on the video's progress bar, and chat through danmaku (scrolling comments) on both YouTube and Netflix. YouTube chapters, thumbnail previews, the most-replayed heatmap and Shorts keep working in study mode. LingTube supports 8 learning languages and more than 10 native languages.
