Veilr - Showcase Project

Veilr started as a side project and turned into a product: a way to talk to strangers from other countries without sharing a language. I began it after the original Omegle shut down in 2023, because the language wall was the one problem nobody had fixed in a random chat. Here's what it does. You pick text, voice or video chat and get matched with a random person somewhere in the world, ranked toward shared interests and the language you're practising. Text messages can arrive translated, with the original one tap away. On voice and video calls you read live captions of what the other person says, translated into your language — 34 caption languages, and captions work in a voice-only call too. Anonymous chat by default, adults-only, report and block in one tap. If you both add each other as contacts, the conversation stays — still translated. That's the language exchange part: a stranger becomes the person you practise with. Web with a 16-language interface, Android on Google Play. Free to start (a run of translations and five minutes of captions per account); Boost passes from $1.99 an hour and caption packs at $2.49 for 120 minutes. Built solo: Node.js, PostgreSQL, Redis, WebRTC with self-hosted TURN plus Cloudflare relay, React/Vite, Capacitor. It's small, so the queue can be empty outside 16:00–20:00 UTC.
