WHAT IT IS BidHerald watches SAM.gov — the portal where the US federal government publishes its contract opportunities — and emails small specialty trade contractors only the notices matching their trade, states and keywords. Target customer: US electrical, HVAC, plumbing, roofing and paving firms of 3–15 people. SAM.gov is free and public, but built for contracting officers: the search is unusable for a tradesperson, and it has to be checked daily, which nobody on a job site does. STATUS — READ THIS FIRST No revenue. No users. Not deployed. No domain. This is a code and concept sale, not a business sale. The application runs end to end, but it has only ever run locally. WHAT IS PROVEN The SAM.gov integration has been run against the live API: 260 real opportunities retrieved in 6 requests, none rejected, sampled sam.gov links returning HTTP 200. Match quality was checked by hand — of 32 real roofing notices, 29 matched and the 3 that did not had passed their deadline. No false positives. Email and payment providers are still simulated. Their code is written and tested against fakes, but has never run against the real APIs. WHAT IS BUILT • Passwordless auth (magic link, hashed single-use tokens) • Onboarding that ends by showing real matching contracts, before any payment • Dashboard: matches, filters, save, dismiss, CSV export • Alerts with full CRUD; unit-tested matching engine • Three idempotent hourly jobs: ingest, match, digest at 6am local time • Stripe subscription ($29/mo) and a one-time $9.99 course, entitlements enforced server-side • 12-lesson course on winning federal contracts • Installable to a phone home screen (PWA) • CAN-SPAM compliant email: one-click unsubscribe, List-Unsubscribe headers, postal address enforced at boot • Terms of Service and Privacy Policy (drafts, not lawyer-reviewed) VERIFIABLE 41 commits, 9,660 lines, 132 files. 55 unit tests, type-check, lint and production build all green. npm audit --omit=dev: zero vulnerabilities. Every external service sits behind an adapter with a working fake, so the whole app — paywall included — runs offline with zero credentials. Clone it, npm install, npm run dev. No accounts needed to evaluate it. DOCUMENTATION README (architecture and design decisions), DEPLOY.md (production setup, Vercel and otherwise), QUICKSTART.md, SPECIFICATION.md (full functional spec) and ASSET-OVERVIEW.md, which contains a written list of every known limitation. KNOWN LIMITATIONS • A personal SAM.gov key allows 10 requests/day. Entity registration (free, 10 business days) raises it to 1,000/day but is tied to the operator and does not transfer. • The trade-to-NAICS mapping is correct on all five codes but its coverage has not been reviewed by a federal contracting professional. • Legal pages are drafts with placeholders for the operator's details. • No per-IP rate limiting on sign-in. Next step: The single highest-leverage step is SAM.gov entity registration. It is freeand takes about ten business days. A personal API key allows 10 requests aday, which is not enough for one ingest run; a registered one allows 1,000.It also re-enables description fetching, so keyword matching runs on the fullnotice text instead of titles alone — a large jump in match quality. Then, in rough order of effort: 1. Widen NAICS coverage. Five codes are wired and all five are correct for their trades, but relevant work may also post under 238910 (Site Preparation) or 238990 (All Other Specialty Trade Contractors). Adding a code is one line in src/lib/trades.ts. 2. Add trades. The mapping is data, not logic — concrete, masonry, glazing, fencing and landscaping all fit the same model without touching the matching engine. 3. Distribution, none of which has been tested: APEX Accelerators are federally funded organisations that help small businesses into government contracting for free and are a logical partner channel; trade associations by specialty; and the 12-lesson course, which is the only public, indexable surface and targets searches like "how to bid on federal contracts". robots.txt and sitemap.xml are already in place for it. 4. Test the price. $29/month and $9.99 are reasoned, not validated. 5. Expand the source. Every external service sits behind an adapter with a fake, so state and county procurement portals can be added as further adapters without changing the matching engine or the jobs. That was deliberately left out of scope, not left undone by accident. The onboarding flow is already built to convert: it ends by showing realmatching contracts before asking for anything, and the 14-day Pro trial takesno card. Those mechanisms exist; their conversion rate does not, becausenobody has been through them.
