About MappiMundi
Create and explore historical and interactive maps
Its goal is to let people create historical and interactive maps. Imagine google map with a timeline, events and multiple layers of data. There a many many historical map images out there on the internet. But they are static. Also If you go on youtube you can find many videos of historical maps, but they are non interactive. With MappiMundi you can create maps where the user can explore in space, time, and decide what data to view. I believe this would be great to learn history, and also follow ongoing events. Want to learn about World War II? Open a map and explore. Want to track/follow the progress on massive floods? Create a map to show everyone what is happening where and when. Some of you may already know the great website: liveuamap.com. It is similar but there are two main differences: users can't create maps interactions are limited. You can't chose what to display or hide. The ultimate end goal is a complete historical world atlas. Imagine a wikipedia on map, where people could explore the whole world at any time. We are not there yet, as MappiMundi still lacks versioning, but again, this is a goal. The address is: https://mappimundi.com In the exploring page, you will find some examples (that still need to be improved). A map of the Napoleonic wars from 1803 with battles. A map of the conflict in Syria and Iraq from 2014 with events. Built with map images from wikipedia. A quick map of the world from 3000 BC to now with all battles. Territories are imported from here and not very accurate.
