YTDb - Showcase Project

Detailed Description

I resented the fact that, though YouTube is a huge part of my media diet, it is so hard to purposefully find new high quality channels. In discovering new content you are limited to basically two options: 1. Praying to the YT algorithm. 2. Googling: "youtubers like x reddit".

This seemed to me severely limiting. Furthermore, it gives big tech way too much power over our media diet, which comes with a whole host of problems, such as algorithmic funnels and bubbles. I thus created a user driven review platform for YT: think IMDB, but for YT. The basic functionality as of yet is the following:

  1. You can add your favorite channel to the database. When you add it you couple it to certain topics. e.g. "politics", "world news", "video essays", etc...
  2. You can review channels in the database; a review consists of the following parts
  3. Overall star rating from 1 - 10
  4. Style sliders: These allow you to express the overall vibe of the creator. e.g: childfriendly <> adult; low energy <> high energy; improvised <> scripted; etc...
  5. An optional written review, can be left blank.
  6. You can use the "Discover" page to search through the database in order to find the channel that best fits the exact topics and vibe that you desire. As of yet you can:
  7. Set topics Use the same style sliders to configure the exact vibe you like. You can mark certainsliders as important or mark them to be ignored entirely.
  8. Use additional filters such as language, avg video length, avg star rating, etc... Once the database is filled with enough reviews.

I think it would be a really nice tool to discover content creators that fit the exact vibe you are looking for, without having to hope that the algorithm magically feeds them to you.

There are still many features I'm thinking of adding, and if you join the open beta, you will have the chance to have a lot of influence over the UX and UI design!

Anyway I hope you like the idea and add a couple of your favorite channels to the database! Any feedback is welcome! Check out the site at https://ytdb.me
