Power System with Battery Backup for Desktop PC Systems (ATX-UPS) - Showcase Project

This UPS is build on the scaffoldings of a regular PSU by intercalating some components between the rectifier block and stabilizer block. Apart from the original PSU it uses a few electro-mechanical relays, some discrete parts, and a few standard sub-assemblies like a battery charger, buck and boost converters, a simple data acquisition module (P, U, I) and a display. Its main characteristics is that it provide secured power supply also to the peripherals (display, speakers ... anything that initially use external 12V DC-adapters). It use manageable batteries (i.e. Li-Ion). The battery is external pluggable to not pose risks to the PC and to be easy replaced or reused for eventually a new PC. It use higher voltages for battery (48V and 96V depending by the desired power rating of the supply). This allow us to safely obtain the required backup power and simplify the construction of the UPS. The battery itself can be very small. An amperage (Ah) identical with a smartphone battery is enough. This mainly because first a desktop-PC don't need 20 hours autonomy, 1/2 hour is enough for an efficient backup supply and second due to the higher voltage used. Another reason is the very low power consumption of the modern peripherals, mainly displays. A new good sized LCD display might have a maximum power rating of about only 25W and a regular power consumption much lower. These powers consumptions of the peripherals might be much lower than of the PC central unit itself (the central unit could happen to consume 100W and all the peripherals even less than 15W). The project needs to be continued and perfected. It consists in a 10 pages PDF, the drawings (SVG files) being provided also independently in the download package. The project is listed as showcase because it is provided for free. Any one who like it is welcome to download and use it for any purpose even as starting point for new improved designs.
