Project Description: Local Exchange Trading Server/ Barter Community The main focus of this application was to introduce a newly accepted currency that places more emphasis on strengthening social links, as opposed to just focusing on monetary gain. In a nutshell, members of the LETS community identify skills they wish to offer and their current requirements for goods and services, which are listed via the website. Members contact each other, and can arrange a ‘trade’ amongst themselves or to agree a price in LETS currency. Use-cases can be (1) a language swap (English vs Spanish), or (2) someone who has a car drives someone else to Heathrow in exchange of IT related service, or (3) thesis proof-reading in exchange of home-cooked exotic meal. These use-cases can be disconnected: the person who drives can be the one benefiting from the home-cooked meal, thanks to the credit system in place.
